3Looks good, works really well, should last longer.
By James A. Johnson
I’ve been pleased with this case for about eight months. It looks good, exactly as pictured here, and I have repeated been surprised with how well it protects the phone with minimal bulk. The edge around the side just barely protrudes past the front and back of the phone; having dropped it multiple times from as high as three feet onto tile, I give it full marks for protection. The problem is that I haven’t had it for nine full months yet, and it started coming apart a couple of weeks ago. The side rubber is becoming detached from the back, and I’m on this site right now looking for a good replacement. I considered getting another of these – I liked it enough, and it’s inexpensive – so it’s not all bad. But I’m going to have to go with one that I hope will have a longer life.

Appearance: 4/5 (looks good, although it’s not spectacular, just as pictured)
Functionality: 5/5 (surprisingly good protection for such a slim profile, good grip)
Durability: 2/5 (I’m moderately hard on phones, so it’s possible it would last longer with someone who’s more careful, which is why I don’t give it a 1/5)
Value: 3/5 (Not durable, but it is inexpensive and works while it lasts)

Overall: 3.5/5 – although I am rounding down to 3 for the review; amazon.com doesn’t allow half-stars, and I’m afraid I just can’t give 4 stars to a product that only lasted eight months.

4Good. But not for everyone.
By Donald Kelly
If you’ve had a Griffin Reveal before, this Reveal Etch will feel quite familiar. Essentially, The Reveal Etch is the soft silicone/TPU type outer band of the Reveal, with a solid back piece, designed to give your phone a bit of flare, as opposed to letting your phone stand out for itself like the plain Reveal.

The Graphite version has a faux carbon fiber backing on it, which to me, was the coolest selling point, but also where this case fails to actually impress. From the photos, you may get the idea that this case has some carbon fiber weave texture to it, when really it doesn’t, the texture and effect on the back of this case is actually very resemblant of the “3D like” holographic cards you sometimes see in advertising, in which the picture changes as you hold it at a different angle, you get two different carbon fiber “views” with this case, and while it’s a rather interesting effect, at $17.99 (when bought directly from Amazon, at the time of this review), it’s sort of a let down. The design makes the case feel a bit cheap when your holding it in your hand, and while the effect is quite believable from a distance, when getting closer to the case others will notice.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually quite like this case, but feel it should be mentioned that the design on the back is not “weave textured” as you may think. This aside, the case is actually very good, providing good protection, just like the see through Reveal, with ample cutouts for the headphone jack and 30 pin connector, and providing good feedback for the volume buttons and sleep/wake button. Do be aware, Verizon iPhones will not work with this case, the cutout for the rocker switch is form fitting to the AT&T variant.

Like is usual from Griffin, your not getting any extras here, just the case, no screen protectors or even a stand, but that’s manageable for most. For anyone in need of a good screen protector which works with this case, You cannot go wrong with any from the SGP Ultra Series (Ultra Crystal, Ultra Optics or Ultra-Oleophobic).

I rated this case 4 out of 5, due to the fact that the design is somewhat of a let down, and that at $17.99, we really should be getting at least a screen protector, while these aren’t requirements, most other cases in this price point include such extras, and there really isn’t a reason why Griffin shouldn’t. If your looking for a solid, no-frills, case and not expecting any pack-ins, go ahead and buy this, you should be rather pleased with it, but be aware, it’s not for everyone.
